What is an embedded provider?

An embedded provider expands and improves mental health care by embedding behavioral health care specialists within the units at their training sites during drill weekends, annual training and family readiness events. They provide stigma-free and convenient access to mental health care professionals during duty hours and with full confidentiality for individuals and units.

Army Vice Chief or Staff General Peter Chiarelli pointed out in January 2011, that it is much more difficult to provide behavioral health resources to individuals not on active duty because "they are often geographically separated, removed from the support network provided by military installations. They lack the camaraderie of fellow soldiers and the daily oversight and hands-on assistance from members of the chain of command experienced while serving on active duty. In many cases, theses soldiers have limited or reduced access to care and services. Meanwhile, they are more vulnerable to the challenges of an adverse economy and a troubled labor market, especially for our young people." (General Chiarelli, DOD News Conference, January 19, 2011.)
