Youth Retreats
Operation Military Kids Speak Out Retreat
4-H, American Legion, MN Department of Education, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Army Reserve, National Guard and Youth. SOMK is a youth-lead program designed to raise awareness of issues facing military families through simulations, interviews, speeches, artwork and other forms of expression. Members of SOMK are military youth and non-military friends who want to support military families. Presentations are done at schools, civic organizations, faith-based groups and various other places to build public awareness about issues facing military families during mobilization and deployment.
Watch the University of Minnesota's video for more. SOMK is a weekend retreat for military youth to share their thoughts and experiences of having a family member deployed with other military youth. The weekend includes reflection time, creative outlets, group activities and social time. The weekend ends with each youth presenting their own story about "their deployment" experience.
